Stepping Into the Courage Zone

Apart from sleep, work is the single largest everyday activity we engage in. As such you would think we would get it right when engaging in an occupation. Why then do we stay in jobs that we aren't happy with; that don't match our skills and strengths, our values and beliefs, or provide us with opportunities to learn and grow?

In the Autumn 2010, Australian Career Practitioner magazine, Dr Darryl Cross, an organisational psychologist, suggests one eplanation might be that our most basic need is for security, control and certainty. We would rather stay with the devil we know than move into the unknown. Instead of recognising our shortfalls we tend to lay blame on everything external, such as the economic environment, or we procrastinate by putting the move off until next year or after the next holiday; there's always an excuse.

By moving out of your 'comfort zone' and into the 'courage zone' you can create a career path and a life beyond your wildest dreams. No matter what your circumstances, we all have the ability to create our own destinies, and all it takes to start it off is a thought or a dream.

If you lived in a perfect world, could have what ever you wanted without constraints, in every aspect of your life, how would your life look? Take ten minutes to write these down. Writing them down will assist you to visualise the things you want, commit you and help you to stay focused. Once you have done this, prioritise your goals and put some actions against each that will guide you on how and when they will be achieved.

Even though you have put everything on your list, it's important for your goals to be achievable and for the timeframes to be realistic. Another thing to remember is that your list of goals is a living doument, not a static one; in other words, it will change. What's important today will be different tomorrow: it's not set in concrete!

The world is there for you to enjoy. Don't be your own worst enemy, get started with your plan and be happy in all aspects of your life.

Write to me about your career and life changes.
